Brown rice in a bowl

If you’ve never tried making rice in the Instant Pot, you’re about to be pleasantly surprised. I won’t go back to any other method for cooking rice now that I know how perfectly it can be done in the IP.

The other really cool thing is that all types of rice use the same method, and none of them need to be pre-rinsed before putting them in. Just use a 1:1 ratio of water to rice and set the pot on high pressure. The cook time is the only thing that varies between the different types of rice.

For brown rice, the cook time is 15 minutes with a 5 minute natural release. This produces perfect rice every time. That’s a time savings over making it on the stovetop, even with the pressurizing time.

What is Brown Rice?

Dry brown rice

Brown rice is a whole grain rice variety with only the outer, inedible husk removed, retaining the bran layer and germ. This makes brown rice more nutritious than white rice, as the milling process for white rice removes both the bran and germ, leaving only the starchy endosperm.

Brown rice has a nuttier flavor and chewier texture compared to white rice. It’s a great way to add essential nutrients to your diet, including dietary fiber, vitamins (particularly B vitamins such as thiamin, niacin, and pyridoxine), minerals (like magnesium, phosphorus, and manganese), and phytochemicals.

Ingredients You Need

Ingredients for brown rice in the Instant Pot

Not surprisingly, this recipe consists of just brown rice and water. It’s super simple. I use an even ratio of each. One cup of rice to one cup of water. You can cook as many cups as you want at a time. The cook time does not vary.

What to Serve With Brown Rice?

Brown rice in a bowl

You can serve brown rice with any dish that requires rice. It’s a very nice tender rice that works well with all dishes. It goes well with a great Indian curry or butter chicken.

In my house, we also serve it with Beef & Broccoli or Panang curry, or just as a plain rice side dish.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I add to brown rice for flavor?

Brown rice has a mild nutty flavor on its own. You can add different ingredients to give it a bit more taste if you like. Soy sauce is one of the main flavoring ingredients to add. You could also add butter and salt. Any kind of oil with a mild flavor can also work well, like olive oil or coconut oil.

What is the proper ratio of water to rice?

In the Instant Pot, you can rest assured that the correct ratio is a 1:1 ratio. When cooking rice in the Instant Pot, always use the same amount of water to rice and it will come out perfectly. If you like your rice to be a bit more soft, you can add an extra 1/8 to 1/4 cup of water to the pot.

Do I need to pre-soak or rinse the rice before cooking?

It is not necessary to rinse the rice before you cook it in the Instant Pot. If you do rinse it, it might cook differently than expected. The most common reason is because you’re adding water to the rice that you wouldn’t have otherwise, so it might get soggy from too much water. If you do rinse your rice, be sure to remove a tablespoon or so of water from the cup you add.

Why is my rice mushy?

If you add too much water or allow too long of a natural release time, your rice might become overcooked and mushy or soggy. It’s impossible to fix, so you’ll want to be very vigilant to make sure this doesn’t happen.
