Instant Pot Spaghetti Squash is quick and easy to make in the Instant Pot, requiring half the time to cook as in the oven, and it can then be used in a number of other dishes like Spaghetti Squash Bolognese.

Cooked spaghetti squash

Using an Instant Pot to make Spaghetti Squash dramatically reduces the cooking time. While traditional methods like baking or boiling may take up to an hour, the Instant Pot can have it ready in about 15 minutes.

Once you’ve set the Instant Pot, you don’t have to monitor it constantly, freeing you to prepare other parts of your meal or simply relax. The Instant Pot cooks the squash evenly, giving you perfect strands every time without the fuss of flipping or rearranging. We use it to cook all kinds of squash, like acorn squash, delicata and even pumpkin.

Ingredients You’ll Need

This is probably one of the easiest recipes you will come across. Only 2 ingredients needed! Use this perfectly cooked spaghetti squash to make things like spaghetti squash Bolognese or a buttered spaghetti squash side dish.

  • Spaghetti squash – When picking one out go for a squash with a solid color without cuts or bruises. Avoid brown patches or punctures.
  • Water – You need water in the Instant Pot to help the pot come up to pressure.

Equipment Needed

  • Instant Pot – I use a 6-quart Instant Pot Plus to make all of my recipes. If you’re using an 8-quart pot, you will need to adjust the amount of liquid accordingly, as it requires more than the 6 quart to build steam.
  • Trivet – Use the trivet to keep the spaghetti squash out of the water.

How to Steam Spaghetti Squash in the Instant Pot

Wash and scrub the exterior of the squash. With a sharp chef’s knife, cut the spaghetti squash in half. You can also remove the stem.

Place the trivet in the Instant Pot inner pot. Pour in 1 cup of water. Set the squash halves face up on the trivet. It’s okay if they overlap.

Lock the lid and set the vent to sealing. Press the pressure cook button and set the timer to 8 minutes. When the time is up, manually release the pressure.

Remove the lid, transfer the squash to a plate and shred with a fork to form “spaghetti”.

How to Use Spaghetti Squash

Spaghetti squash, with its unique texture and mild flavor, is a versatile ingredient that can be used in various dishes. Here are some ways you can incorporate it into your meals:

  • Pasta Substitute: Replace traditional pasta with spaghetti squash for a lower-carb, gluten-free option. Toss it with marinara sauce, meatballs, or pesto, just like you would with regular spaghetti.
  • Stir-Fry Base: Use spaghetti squash as the base for a vegetable or protein stir-fry. It can absorb the flavors of sauces like soy or teriyaki, making it a fantastic addition to Asian-inspired dishes.
  • Casseroles: Mix spaghetti squash with other ingredients like cheese, meat, and vegetables to create a filling casserole. It can be an excellent way to use leftovers while creating a comforting meal.
  • Stuffed Squash Bowls: Halve and cook the squash, then stuff it with fillings like sautéed vegetables, cheese, and cooked meat. Bake until bubbly for a delightful and eye-catching entrée.
  • Salads: Cool the cooked spaghetti squash and toss it with other salad ingredients like arugula, cherry tomatoes, nuts, and a vinaigrette for a refreshing and crunchy salad.

Helpful Tips

  • Select the Right Size: Choose a spaghetti squash that fits comfortably in your Instant Pot. For larger pots (6-quart or more), a medium to large squash should work well.
  • Cutting Techniques: Cut the squash in half either lengthwise or crosswise. Cutting it crosswise can result in longer strands, while lengthwise may be easier to handle.
  • Remove Seeds: Before cooking, make sure to scoop out the seeds and any loose, stringy pulp from the inside of the squash.
  • Use a Trivet or Steamer Basket: Place the squash on a trivet or in a steamer basket inside the Instant Pot to keep it elevated from the liquid, ensuring even cooking without becoming soggy.
  • Mind the Cooking Time: Cooking time may vary based on the size and thickness of the squash. Generally, 7-9 minutes on high pressure should suffice, but you may need to adjust based on your preferences.
  • Natural Release is Key: Allow a natural pressure release for at least 10 minutes before switching to a quick release. This helps the squash finish cooking gently and retain its texture.

Additions & Flavorings

If you want to add some extra flavor to your spaghetti squash, you can add spices besides salt and pepper to the flesh of the squash before cooking. Some I like to use are:

  • Seasoned salt
  • Cumin and chili powder
  • Onion powder
  • Cinnamon/sugar for a sweet treat
  • Butter and sage
